The Volunteer Council is a private, non-profit 501-c-3 organization formed in 1981. The Council is composed of community representatives who want to help meet the special, long-term needs of individuals at CHDC. The primary mission of the Council is to provide resources for these needs, with the goal of improving the quality of life for residents at the center. The secondary purpose of the council is to increase community awareness of the needs and the abilities of CHDC individuals; council members help further this awareness in their day-to-day lives with information provided at meetings.
The Council adopts center projects not funded by the Arkansas State Legislature or by federal funds, but which have the endorsement of the center, superintendent and state boards and agencies that govern center operations. The Council organizes two annual fundraisers, recruits new members, and, when possible, informs the community about CHDC.
The volunteer Council meets the third Thursday of each month (unless otherwise announced) at noon. Meetings are held on campus at the Visitation Center, which was funded by Volunteer Council efforts. Lunch is provided and meetings seldom last more than one hour. Besides discussing council business, informative programs are conducted about innovative projects and services provided to residents which increase job skills or community interaction.
If you are interested in supporting CHDC's mission of service to individuals with developmental disabilities and would like to do so by joining the Council, please call Elizabeth Litton, Volunteer Coordinator at (501) 329-6851, extension 319, or email Elizabeth Litton.
